The Territory

Monferrato is a land rich in history, even its name origin goes back to the mythical Aleramo legend! Aleramo was a noble German warrior who lived around 960. The Emperor gifted him so much land as he could cover riding with his horse in three days. While riding, Aleramo had to shoe (ferrň in local dialect) his horse and, because he didn’t have any other tool in hand, he used a brick (‘mun’ in local dialect) to do so. So Monferrato was named after Aleramo’s brick-shoed horse. The ‘aleramic horseride’ custom is still alive in our days. The territory is mainly hilly, and is characterized by wide areas covered with vineyards alternating with forests and remote valleys. On almost every hilltop you can see castles, towers and ruins which, together with the many churches, abbeys and chapels distinguish each village in Monferrato and prove the old war power of the area, representing nowadays a precious patrimony of historical and cultural interest. The village of Camino, were the company is located, is typical of this area. It is dominated by the Scarampi castle that is the oldest in Monferrato (XI century) and surrounded by rolling hills reflecting into the rice fields lying right at their feet. Monferrato represents the production site of many of the Piedmont’s d.o.c. and d.o.c.g. wines, thanks to the particular hilly structure of the territory, to its favorable climate and to each reach, even though not easy to cultivate, soil. Here we have a production reality made up of small properties of average and rather low yields, but because of this, each product has its very particular organoleptic characteristics.
